- Topic: Human Robot Interaction
- Supplementary Description: This course surveys the emerging field of human-robot interaction (HRI). HRI researchers tackle the social and technical challenges involved in understanding how people perceive and are affected by robots, and in creating robots that interact in ways that are natural and intuitive for human partners. We will discuss the design, evaluation, and societal significance of interactive robots from a human-centered perspective through readings, discussion, and creating HRI prototypes using Arduino.

- Supplementary Description: Networks pervade all aspects of our lives: friends, computers, the Web, and our brain are examples. The network is a general yet powerful way to represent and study simple and complex relationships. This course introduces network science as a way to understand complex patterns of connections and relationships. Once we acquire the basic tools needed to analyze and model networks through computers, we will explore increasingly complex social, infrastructure, information, and biological networks.

- Topic: Intro To Virtual Heritage
- Supplementary Description: This course focuses on the digital representation, restoration, online publication, and analysis of small cultural heritage artifacts. Students will learn how to capture the 3D data of a three-dimensional work of an artifact, how to take the raw data and make a polygonal model, how to texture and paint the model, how to restore damage to the artifact, and how to publish the resulting 3D digital models on the Internet.

- Supplementary Description: The design and construction of technology is only the beginning of the challenging process of implementing (and maintaining) complex information systems. In this course, we will explore the technical, sociological, ethnographic, and historical literature that deals with the organizational aspects of information technology. The focus will be on business information systems, but we will also look at scientific, governmental, and health-related organizations as well.

- Supplementary Description: What is technology and what effect does it have on us? Is it good, bad, neutral, or simply alien? Different thinkers say different things, but all agree that we are living through a time of massive change, largely triggered by technological change. What has this meant for us in the past, what does it mean for us now, and what might it mean for our future?

- Topic: Music And Programming
- Supplementary Description: The over-arching goal is to learn PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN that are analogous for both music and programming. The secondary goals are to (1) attain a life-long skill through an introduction to music, and (2) preparation for designing programs in A201 or similar introductory programming courses.
This is a class that does NOT require the students to read music. It does NOT require them to know a programming language. It does NOT require artistic (drawing) or musical (playing an instrument) ability. Students MUST be willing to: * pick out notes and tunes on a keyboard. * invent their own tunes—and there is a LOT OF LEEWAY here. * draw rough pictures or sketches that represent the music they invent. * share their pictures with other students to interpret as music (and vice-versa). * sign up for a free site on MySpace or Reverbnation to upload and share their music. * listen to music of selected musicians from a wide variety of styles. * try to imitate several styles. * write one or two analysis papers as part of their work. * join in a class project by inventing some music that fits the project, but is their interpretation of their part of it. * learn about design principles common to music and programming. * apply the design principles for programming to invent a piece of music. * read assigned material on the web (no textbook). * COME TO CLASS—this is VERY IMPORTANT. * EXPERIMENT with the keyboards during selected class and lab times.
